Cutting on the Snowy Hydro Power Scheme
Snowy
Hydro, the organisation charged with maintaining both
the hydro generating and the irrigating capacity of
the Snowy Mountains scheme were required to update their
communications systems.
After a lot of investigation they decided the best way
to do this was to install a fibre-optic cable within
the tunnel system. To protect the cable from both the
flowing water as well as vehicles and debris during
tunnel maintenance periods, the cable had to be "buried"
into the concrete floor or lining of the tunnels. To
bury the cable required a chase or slot 15-16mm. wide
by 40-60mm. deep to be cut.
The time frame was short, the first tunnel was 11kms
long and we had 5 days to do the job, and the second
was 14 kms long and we had 10 days to do that part of
the job.
Using CC8000 Ride-on saws, we finished the job within
the time allowed (3 days and 6 days respectively).
The slurry generated by concrete cutting operations
were required to be collected at source, i.e. as it
came off the blade. A blade guard was designed and manufactured
by us to make this more easily achieved. Again, targets
were met on this aspect of the job.
