Removal of floor slab to create new lift shaft
in existing building
Because
of changed usage in the building, openings in 10 levels
of the building had to be cut to allow for two new lifts
to be installed.
Most of the floors were precast slabs, 150mm. thick
with ribs at 1 metre centres that was 300mm thick. The
bottom floor was 750mm. thick. As the building was occupied,
work had to be carried out at night. All the machines
were required to be electrically powered as no petrol
or diesel fumes were permitted. Slurry control was a
concern, because the new owner was a telecommunications
company with a lot of sensitive electronic equipment
in close proximity to the working areas. With proper
screening, and several people dedicated solely to slurry
control during cutting operations, no slurry escaped
into any sensitive areas. The slurry was collected for
later disposal off site, as were the slabs.
Each floor took two hours to cut with another 1.5 hours
to lower the slabs to the ground floor and stack.
